According to the 2001 Census there are nearly 12,000 people in the Lancaster District over the age of 75.
My mum (Ivy the Terrible) is over 80 years old and disabled following a stroke. She lives independently in adapted accomodation, and is secretary to one busy organisation and life-president of another. Like many of her age, she has a wealth of experience behind her and has gathered many essential skills. She is part of the great volunteer army of retired men and women without whose charitable work, fundraising and contributions to community life our communities would be fickle, soulless places. This section of the site is dedicated to resources for the area's Senior Citizens.

Lancaster District 50 Forward Project - making life simple
27/8/08: Life has just got better for our over 50s, thanks to Lancaster City Council and the Lancaster District 50 Forward project.
Getting hold of the right information when you need it can be a daunting task for anyone but now that the council have opened a one-stop shop and helpline for residents over 50, life couldn’t be simpler.
The aim of the new service which is based at the council's customer service centres at Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls is to provide residents with direct access to information from a variety of sources that is relevant to people over 50 years of age, whether it be for themselves or on behalf of an elderly relative.
Residents can now call the new 50 Forward helpline on 01524 586850 with their enquiry or send an email to 50forward@lancaster.gov.uk. Alternatively you can call in at one of the council’s customer service centres and speak to a member of staff. The centres are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Information is available on a range of issues including:
Care services and home helps
Handyperson scheme
Health and wellbeing
Housing
Transport
Leisure activities
Employment, training and volunteering opportunities
However, to help the 50Forward project deal with as wide a range of enquiries as possible in this way, Lancaster City Council needs your help.
If you can think of any other information or advice which might be needed by people over 50, please contact the customer services team on the above number.
Commenting on the good news, Cynthia Youde, a member of the 50 Forward Residents' Focus Group said: “It is wonderful to know that with one local telephone call with real people at the other end, I am able to source so much information from council tax to social services, health and all things important to families and residents in the area.”
Coun John Barnes, member of the 50 Forward Project Board agrees: "This is great news for the over 50s living in our district. Having all the information they might need available under one local roof will free up more of their time to enjoy a happier and active life."
The 50 Forward project has been designed in partnership with Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council, Department of Work and Pensions, Forum for the Older Person, Age Concern Lancashire, Signposts and the Lancaster District Older People’s Partnership.
