LESBIAN & GAY FILMFEST @ THE DUKES
8/8/07: This summer the Dukes will be screening films from the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival while adding some of its favourite classics for you to enjoy.
This celebration of lesbian and gay culture will run from the 6 to the 22 of August and includes stunning cult classics such as the highly controversial, 1976 masterpiece, Sebastiane.

Dukes film programme manager, Leon Gurevitch said, “The season will showcase a colourful variety of well-loved gay and lesbian and will provide a rare chance to see them on the big screen.

“I am particularly pleased to have secured seminal works such as Desert Hearts and Pink Narcissus alongside more contemporary films that showcase the new lesbian and gay talent emerging in the industry.

Jennifer Daffin, Lancaster District Pride committee secretary said, “This is a superb opportunity for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (lgbt) community of Lancaster to celebrate who we are.

“It will also allow non-lgbt people an insight into lgbt culture and the issues that we face, and have faced historically.”

She added, “The forward thinking of the Dukes which resulted in their decision to host this festival is excellent, helping to put Lancaster on a cultural par with larger cities. “

Film ticket prices are £5 (£4 conc). For booking information please contact the Dukes Box Office on 084503440654

CHECK OUT REVAMPED LANCASTER PRIDE WEBSITE
20/5/07: See www.lancasterpride.co.uk.
Over the last month or so, Dean Clinton has been tweaking the new Lancaster Pride 2007 website, to include some community features. The old site(s) have been archived, and can be accessed through the various links on the main homepage - or for the new site, click the 2007 image.

We now have an events calendar on the right-hand side, which lists the events occurring in that month, as well as future and past months - if you click the < and > links below the calendar, it will scroll through the months. So keep an eye on it :-)

We also have an RSS feed, so for those of you that use RSS news readers, point your reader to the following URL, and it will update whenever we add news articles to the site. http://www.lancasterpride.co.uk/2007/feed/atom/

You can comment on items that we put on the site, by reading the article. Once you've read the article, scroll to the bottom of it, and you will see a comments box - which is where you enter what you want to say. Comments don't automatically appear - I have to manually approve the comments, so that we don't get filled with Spam. I usually approve comments within a few hours.

When we write a news article to the Pride website, it will appear under the "Recently Written" header in the middle column - urgent news will be posted to the front page, but non-urgent goes there (newest first). Below that, the news is sorted monthly.

We are also building a list of important LGBT links - if you know of any, please feel free to email them to the main pride team, who will review them, and if appropriate, forward them to me for inclusion onthe site.

If you want to e-Mail the pride team, then there is now a working Contact Form on the site - this has a mathematical sum on it - this stops the spammers, as spambots can't work out sums. The question is 3+2=? (and the answer is 5). The form is located here: www.lancasterpride.co.uk/2007/contact-us/

We also have some forums installed on the site - Before I continue, I must stress that we are currently trialling them. If they are successful, then over time, we will expand the forums to cover more sections - and if you have any ideas, feel free to send them to me. The forums are located here:
www.lancasterpride.co.uk/forums/

Remember, we are always looking for Volunteers to help out at the Pride events - check out the Volunteer page on the website for details.

To successfully receive mail from us all the time, you will need to make sure that you whitelist our email address (i.e. "Allow" us through your Spam Filter) - make sure that you whitelist the general pride email address, info@lancasterpride.co.uk

07/06/06: The advent of Civil Partnerships has led to furore on the one side, jubilation on the other, and, in private, to thousands of gay couples nationwide looking at each other askance and wondering whether to take the plunge. However one Lancaster couple has had no hesitation whatsoever in tying the knot - and to celebrate the legal formalising of their union Michael Nunn and John Burkinshaw actually commissioned the world premiere of an opretta to be specially performed after the ceremony in Lancaster's Ashton Memorial. LANCASTER PRIDE 2005
2 - 11 December 2005
Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in the Lancaster and Morecambe District have got together to organise the first-ever Lancaster Pride Festival to be held in the first week of December. Lancaster Pride aims to strike the right balance between celebrating diversity and raising awareness of the concerns and difficulties that still affect LGBT individuals, their families and friends.
Continuing in the spirit of last year's successful Diversity Festival, Pride organisers would like to invite everybody in the Lancaster and Morecambe District to participate in the festivities. Pride organiser and youth worker Lenny St. Jean says: "The LGBT community along with other minority communities has struggled for recognition over the years, and the time has now come for us in Lancaster to have our own special celebration. We want to let people know we're proud and active members of this community" .
Local journalist Michael Nunn adds: "We must all continue to let it be known that prejudice, homophobia and discrimination have no place in anyone' s lives. Everyone is welcome to join in with our Pride celebration, as we are all part of each others' communities". Indeed, the organisers of the festival plan to continue working with local agencies throughout the year to support any relevant national initiatives. One example will be to back anti-bullying campaigns to prevent abuse toward LGBT individuals both in schools and in the workplace.
"A draft programme of events has been worked out. We will be starting Friday 2 December with an Opening Celebration in Lancaster's Town Centre, where local musicians will be performing. We will then move on to a Civic Reception in the Town Hall, where there will be speakers, food and more entertainment," says PRIDE organiser Sabrina Mazzoni. "Everyone will be welcome to join us and show support. The evening will be free, fun and accessible to all".
Other events have been planned for the days to follow including films, performances, DJ dance events, education and awareness-raising workshops and information stalls at various public spaces. These events will be held at various familiar venues, such as the Gregson Community Centre, the Dukes Playhouse, the Friends' Meeting House, St Martin's College, and at Lancaster University. A finalised programme of events is due to be publicised soon.
"The planning and organisation of this festival has brought together many different people from the LGBT community in our local area - and from beyond", says Pride Chair Miriam Murtin. "We have already attracted funds and support from the Council and other bodies", she continues. "But we are still looking for more help, as well as ideas that can realistically be incorporated into the festival, either this year or in the future".
Do your want to become involved to make Lancaster Pride a success? If you would like to be part of the growing team of organisers, helpers, funders and advisors, then don't hesitate to contact us at: lancaster_pride@yahoo.co.uk. 15/6/04 Michael Nunn has put together an analysis of the new positive action initiative from Cumbrian Police to address "the under reporting of hate incidents by members of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community". The definition of 'hate crime' is one that applies nationally, and not only to LGB incidents. Cumbrians can report these online too. Read it.
