HIGHFIELD REGENERATION
CONSULTATION

What do YOU think?

Following the public meeting at The Gregson on 5 September 2006, a steering group of 17 people, mostly local residents, was formed to take forward the project of restoring and regenerating Highfield, (at the corner of Derwent and Quernmore roads), with particular reference to the long abandoned tennis courts and woodland.

During 5 meetings and via email conferencing there was intensive discussion ranging over what access (open or restricted) there might be to the various parts of the site – whether to restore the courts simply for tennis or have one of them for multi-sports – or whether one of the courts should be converted into a family recreation area.

We had to bear in mind the probable financial implications of our decisions in terms of capital expenditure; attracting grants and contributions; and ongoing maintenance.
In addition we took into consideration nearby sports and recreational provision, as well as the impact on neighbouring properties and institutions.

We have commissioned a design for the site containing our preferred options, which we now wish to submit to the community for its comments.

The proposed design consists of the four following elements:

• the establishment of an open access 5-a-side soccer pitch on the grassed area between the swings and the ‘youth hang-out’ area at the top end of the field;

• development of the present wooded area on the banking east of the tennis courts, to enhance wildlife provision whilst also providing a woodland ‘bark path’ and attractive recreation area, with open access to the public;

• resurfacing and refurbishment of both double tennis courts (one adapted for multi-games use) which, like the bowling greens at present, would have restricted access, though casual use should also be encouraged via the voluntary stewardship of tennis and bowling club members;

• the present small area of inaccessible woodland between the greens, tennis courts and allotments to be set aside as a dedicated wildlife area with access only for woodland and wildlife management purposes.

Consultation ends Thursday 31 January 2007.
