The
Haffner Orchestra The Haffner Orchestra is an orchestra of a very high standard, which draws its players from Lancaster and the surrounding area. It is established as one of Lancaster’s cultural assets.
Three concerts are given each season, usually in late November, late
February and mid-June. Extra events like masterclasses and workshops
are also organised, and there is a calendar of social events. A reception
is held after the summer concert. We have a number of fundraising events
during the year, usually including a garden party in May.
The orchestra is run by a committee. Members are elected annually from
the orchestra and interested supporters. The Orchestra is a member of
"Making Music", and is a registered charity, no. 509571.

He Said / She Said A new indie rock band from the small town of Lancaster.
After being raised by wolves in the wild it is believed that Julian
Goldie spent years perfecting his guitar abilities with Shaolin monks in
Tibet. Meanwhile Rowan Cooper-Davies was escaping from a high security
prison in nearby Mongolia. Upon escaping he ran to the Shaolin temple
claiming sanctuary from the Mongolian secret police. Here he met Goldie who
was impressed by his 'mad flow'. With the help of the monks' supreme kung-fu
skills, Julian's shredding abilities, and Rowan's beats 'n' rhymes they were
able to defeat the entire Mongolian police force, eventually conquering the
Mongolian state, where they met Lee Reeves, a poor street kid who had
salvaged a battered four-string. Ever since, the trio have been overturning
corrupt governments with their catchy tunes and dazzling abilities.

Irregardless E-mail:
offbeat@globalnet.co.uk Tel: 01524 35193. Sam Dale - guitar, vocals, Steve Lewis - guitar, vocals, percussion,
Ben McCabe - drums, vocals, French horn, thumb piano, Louis Davy - double
bass. “Inventive, knee-trembling and funky”. Imagine, if
you will, the likes of Bjork, Ali Farka Toure, Scott Walker, Cowboy
Junkies, Jimmy Guiffre and Frank Zappa stuck together overnight in a
lift. The somewhat gooey and ludicrously fertile mess you'd find sticking
to the floor when the doors finally opened next morning is the stuff
that Irregardless are made of. The maverick-homeboy Steve Lewis, the
pincer-precise Sam Dale, the bushelhidden Ben McCabe and the down tempo
tyro Louis Davy perform a loosely collected set of tightly arranged
songs with lyrics by the likes of Rumi. T S Elliott, Carl Jung, Ludwig
Wittgenstein and a bottle of bleach.

Jon Moore Quartet With Jon's diverse musical background this
quartet was
never going to be ordinary. Here is a modern jazz
quartet with a twist - performing originals and material by,
amongst others, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, and Benny
Golson, but presenting it with a calypso spin, a reggae
skank, or as tearaway swing. Always tuneful and positive! Featuring
Jon Moore (guitar), Jason Walsh (keyboards), Laurence Canty (bass),
and Andy Smith (drums).

Lancaster Millennium Choir We are a Community Choir and we encourage all singers, neophytes or old hands, aged 11 to 111, to join us in trying out new (and often frankly outlandish) ideas, usually prepared for us by resident stave-spoiler Andy Whitfield. We meet on Mondays during school term-time at the Gregson Centre, Lancaster from 7-9pm – please come and join in! You can just turn up and see if it suits you, or else ring Mike in advance on (01524) 61213 or email him at m.wright@lancaster.ac.uk
There are no auditions, but enthusiasm and a sense of humour are essential. Our current repertoire concerns such hot topics as children's rights, pregnancy, bullying, amnesia, Dr Who and the Lone Ranger, though we do allow ourselves every now and then to sing something a bit older and better known (e.g. the Kinks, Hoagy Carmichael, Randy Newman, Handel, …). We perform for the public about five times a year; recent gigs have included the Sage Theatre (Gateshead), halfway up Ingleborough, various streets and church halls and of course the good old Gregson itself. Proceeds (when we get any) normally go to a charity in Madagascar.
Lancaster
Priory Choir The Lancaster Priory Choir, affiliated to
the Royal School of Church Music, is of the traditional English Cathedral
style - boy treble, male alto, tenor and bass. A wide range of music
is sung to a high standard. Many boys and young men are members of the
Northern Cathedral Singers and have also been on RSCM residential training
courses, usually at Rossall School, Fleetwood. Some are also invited
by the RSCM to take part in the Cathedral Courses for more advanced
singers.
Lancaster
Singers Over the last 30 years Lancaster Singers has grown
to a 50-strong mixed-voice chamber choir. All of us have had a short,
informal audition, and although some musical literacy is expected, we
believe the variety of our musical backgrounds adds to the diversity
and flexibility of the group. What unites us all is a love of music
and performance, and the pursuit of musical excellence.
We perform works from the Renaissance to present day, including new
commissions. Over the years we have included most of the great choral
masterpieces. We perform as an a capella group through to large scale
works with orchestra. We normally give 5 concerts year which are held
in a variety of venues ranging from large concert halls, where we perform
with professional orchestras and soloists, to tiny village churches.
If you are interested in joining us, there are limited vacancies for
new members. Please contact the Secretary, Stella Birchall on 015242

Pete
Lashley Pete's thought provoking lyrics, soaring vocals,
and intricate rhythmical guitar playing have been described by BBC 6
Music as 'Excellent'. The Westmorland Gazette and Lancaster Visitor
both described 2 of Pete's recent albums as 'passionate' and 'hugely
impressive' with variety and melody being their strength. Pete crafted
his trade of performing with guitar in hand on the streets of cities
and towns in New Zealand and Australia. This gave him the self belief
to push on and to immerse himself in creating and performing as a full-time
professional musician. Pete has released 4 albums, Pete Lashley (2002),
Southern Upland (2002), Gravel (2003), Slate (2004). He is on the verge
of releasing his 5th album 'Air Of The Gods' and will be playing songs
from this album, amongst others at Spotlight. If you want to find out
more about Pete and have a listen to some of his music you can go on

Howard
Haigh and Lava 'The
majority of our music consists of original compositions by Howard Haigh
but they are based on Traditional styles from Spain, South/Central America,
Middle Eastern, Gipsy styles, and Jazz/Blues. We refer to our music
as Latino Guitar Blues - but then we also have accordion, saxophone,
mandolin and even bagpipes in the mix at times. We like to encourage
our audiences to join in at the appropriate moments (not in the quieter
numbers please, but let rip in the noisier sections). We have a selection
of instruments to hand out to you so please feel free to get into the
spirit of things. And if you want to dance then please get out on that
dance floor and go for it.
LAVA is a 'movable feast' allowing for a great deal of variety and
flexibility. The group can go from classical to hard Funk, taking in
Tango, Celtic, Rumba, Blues, Gipsy Folk and many other styles. We work
as a duo ('Talkin' Guitars' with Howard and Guy), a
FunkyLatinoDanceQuintet (Lavadelica), and the regular
LAVA four-piece (or, on occasion, trio). Each performance is different.

in the main, their own material and are respected as fine musicians,
have recorded several CDs and have earned a reputation as presenting
a storming evening of loud, danceable rock.
"I know nothing about this band's vital stats etc, but having seen
them about five times live, I have to hand it to them, they've got some
tight and strong rhythms that send the whole room to the dancefloor.
Excellent atmosphere, happy crowd." -- Satori
The New Hawks "Cello, twin violins, guitars, drums, gongs and percussion spun out rolling soundscapes full of texture and change, evoking a wind-blasted, brutal, but passionately charged landscape. You could sense the solitary bird of prey hovering, wings lapped by the wind, but the eyes never losing focus." Read the full review

Between us, we have many years experience playing for concerts and Ceilidh dances, for weddings & civil partnerships, parties, village hall and school events etc.
For dances, we play tunes that fit the dances, wherever they are from! Most of our repetoire is British or Irish, with a smattering of tunes from the rest of Europe, the USA and a few of our own.
We also have a particular interest in reviving the traditional dance music of this area and the North West.
We work with several dance callers who are very experienced at choosing dances to suit the occasion and the company. In between dances, we often play tunes and songs from a wider concert repetoire including Spanish fandangos, African tunes, Cajun and the odd bit of blues or bluegrass!
