Ricki & Dawn Boswell-Challand
Ricki and Dawn Boswell-Challand are a husband and wife team of experienced photographers, providing quality wedding, portrait, event and commercial photography services in Lancashire, Cumbria and across the Northwest of England.
When the monks from the Lubum Khangtsen Monastery of Karwar in India came to Lancaster as part of their World Peace Tour in January 2005 (and again in 2007), they spend 4 days in Lancaster Priory building a sand mandala representing the Chenrezig temple. Yantra, the building of such mandalas grain by grain from coloured sand is a centuries-old Tibetan buddhist meditation technique. Dawn witnessed this process with her camera, photographing the monks at work, at rest and at prayer. Her website www.boswellphotographic.com now shows a series of these images, fascinating for the insight they offer into the monks’ practice – and also showing the real warmth that developed between the monks and their photographer through the week. You see the gradual building of the mandala to its ultimate perfection – and its destruction as within seconds the week’s beautiful and incredibly fine work is swept away to be thrown into the river.
