Ben WallaceBen Wallace MP
Lancaster & Wyre
Conservative
Previously a member of the Scottish Parliament Ben Wallace is a keen supporter of the Countryside Alliance and a director of military technology corp Qinetiq, part owned by the Carlyle Group with lucrative contracts servicing the Iraq conflict. While the Conservative vote was little changed from the 2001 election, Labour's suffered a hefty 8% drop.

MORECAMBE & LUNESDALE
Geraldine Smith Labour 20,331 48.8 -0.8
James Airey Conservative 15,563 37.4 +0.1
Alex Stone Liberal Democrat 5,741 13.8 +4.6
  Majority 4,768 11.5
  Turnout 41,635 61.4 +0.3
Geraldine Smith MP
Morecambe & Lunesdale
Labour
In 1997 Geraldine Smith overhauled a notional Conservative majority of 10,572 to win by a touch under 6,000 votes. She beat Conservative Mark Lennox-Boyd, previously secretary to Margaret Thatcher, who had tried to bring a nuclear waste facility to Heysham. She was named Labour's 2004 Campaigning MP of the Year for her (largely unsuccessful) attempts to have the cockling industry regulated following the 2004 cockling tragedy and the devastation of the Morecambe Bay cockle beds due to over-exploitation.
