City Council Resolution on the Canal Corridor (11.12.02) as amended:
In view of recent media speculation concerning the redevelopment of the
Canal Corridor (North) area of Lancaster and the future of the Musician's Co-operative
in particular, we believe that the City Council should:
- Not sell its own land and/or buildings in this area in order to facilitate
supermarket development or big box retailing.
- Not sell its own land or buildings in this area for a scheme dependent on
road developments beyond those envisaged in the local plan.
- Not sell its own land or buildings for any scheme of retail expansion of
such a size that it would damage the viability of the existing City Centre.
In discussions with potential developers continue to promote the provisions
in the Canal Corridor North Development Brief that insist on a variety of uses
with provision for local small businesses, housing and open space and a "cultural
quarter".
- Consult widely with local residents on any proposed scheme before selling
any of its land or buildings to facilitate such a scheme.
- Negotiate a lease with the Musician's Co-operative which gives sufficient
security of tenure in its current building to allow the organisation to applyfor
funding to improve the building and develop its activities
Council further resolves that the contents of this resolution shall form part
of the policy framework of the Council.

• Read about the plans to build a giant supermarket that will doom many
local small businesses - and the road plan that will cut Lancaster in two that
has consistently been rejected by local residents over the last 30 years as a
