ALL ABOUT FAMILY
Last Saturday of every month The Crypt, Lancaster
£3 8pm-1am
FAMILY
is a dance night which has been running successfully since the end of
2002 and the promoters, Sally and Cass, started the night up for fun
and to compensate for the (then) lack of a decent local dance night,
and are very much in it for the love of music. Between them they've
got quite a bit of experience of putting on parties, festivals, and
other events, and Cass has 10 years of deejaying in Amsterdam both in
clubs (Paradiso, Melkweg, Mazzo), free parties, and on Amsterdam radio.
The night is a joint effort with decisions taken democratically
by the promoters, and everybody who works at FAMILY is treated the same
– whether they organise, DJ, do the door, or do the décor.
At
FAMILY DJs are sometimes encouraged to stretch themselves; maybe use
musical styles they don't often play out. Who knows what lurks
unseen in other peoples' record boxes… On the other hand
we also like to have fun with the occasional genre-dedicated night,
like FAMILY GOES TECHNO last Spring. Music policy is PLAY GOOD SHIT
& GET UP AND DANCE. If there is a Family style it's phat juicy
beats – you'll hear tribal House, Breaks, D&B –
we'll take you on a journey.
We're
so happy that the DJs that play for FAMILY are so talented and varied.
Not to mention sumptuous décor designed and installed by Hoodwinked,
the door operated by the divine Rowan, goodies up for grabs on every
table, and midnight fruit handed to thirsty dancers by Zoe the beautiful
Fruit Maiden…
The
music at FAMILY has been just awesome so far, as the packed and happy
dance floor has shown. DJs playing for us include:
DJ Wild (Family, Birth & Proper), Guy C (Birth &Home Grown),
Pandora, Rob G (Jinx), Tasha, Logikal (Proper), Imran (Tonk), Jossa
(Zicada, & Jinx), Lady D, The Ginja Ninja (Sugar House), Whip (Acme
Bass Co.), Jay Ball, Gez the Ruffneck Warrior (Acme Bass), Big G (Birth,
Proper Records), Bent Coppa (Birth, Proper),Matt Proper (Rhythm Method)
DJ Hood (Sonic Boom, Mayhem) The list goes on!
We have some more real treats in store for FAMILY this
autumn, starting with very special guest Andy Jarrod of 3Beat Records,
who rocked the house in October, and Guy C, Logikal, and Brainy (Rhythm
Method) on November 29. Look out for our Drum & Bass FAMILY 1st
Birthday special with the mighty Sub'Erb'n'Kaos
on 27th December, and make sure you get tickets for the Family New Years
Eve Party – lots of DJs and lots of treats in store. Lineup so
far includes DJ Wild, Guy C, the Whip, Pandora, Imran, & others
tbc. You don't wanna miss this!
Satori says: I haven't missed a Family night yet - it's
a really friendly, happy night with stupendously foot-tripping music.
What I really like is just that people are cool (just? if it was that
easy why are so many places not?) - there's no greasy guys trying to
rub on you - like last time I was at Toast, there's no pervs like the
sad guy who flashed at me at Revolution, there's no loud pissheads losing
it - it's just a happy crowd of people who all have a life. All ages,
shades, students, townies, out-of-townies, villagers, rich, broke, smart,
slow - the point is being warm, living with grace and knowing how to
have fun without needing to be grabby and desperate. Of all the nights
in town - this is the one that satisfies. We dance like dervishes, we
howl like - howly people, I go home sweaty + happy - I just wish it
was more often.
