REVIEW -- EXHIBITIONS - BEASTS of the
NILE
Aspects of Egyptian Animals
Lancaster City Museum, Market Square, Lancaster
Until 27 April 2006
A great idea, very child-friendly, for half term. Or
any other time.
On our way home from a virtual-lancaster staff meeting-cum-lunch,
John and I popped into the City Museum for a contemplative nosey at
the latest exhibition there. We were amazed at the variety of
the wonderful collection of Egyptian artefacts -- everything from
fabrics, ceramics, works in glass and cement (yes, apparently they
had cement) to mummified fish and kittens (aww -- they venerated
cats, remember) and jewellery.
Many of the pieces are from the amazing collection of Bolton
Museum
and some indeed from the internationally renowned British
Museum. When
you're next in Bolton or London, go and visit these places they're
free! (except for special exhibitions).
What also impressed us was the child-friendly nature of the show. There
were plenty of kids' activities, and there were as many youngsters
as adults looking round whilst we were there. This is a great
idea for what to do with the family on a wet afternoon or for
non-parents to visit at any time.
Did you see the hedgehog or the exquisite patterned sandals? It
would have been great to be able to buy reproductions of the gorgeous
and ingenious jewellery.
Lancaster is fortunate to get chance to see some of this incredible
stuff. Parent or not, grab this rare opportunity to see some
of these wonderful items of both beauty and historical interest.
