I've found it, the place where art and imagination are
alive and happening and fresh and real and grabbing. Last Saturday
they manifested at the Gregson Institute with the DIY Fashion Show
and rocked the house.
In
their own words: Plastic Rose Art Company (Melanie
Callaghan and Georgia Rusch) is an independent community art project
whose aim is to tailor individual art projects to any group's
needs. Plastic Rose aims to be open to promote creativity and are
open to any one who wishes to their services especially those who
would not normally have access to such resources.
Recreations is an environmental education
co-operative based in Lancashire and Cumbria. It consists of two workers:
Jen and Sam, who work on a freelance basis. It delivers high quality
programmes, workshops and projects to schools, youth and community
groups.
They
ran a series of workshops leading up to the fashion show to help people
working on their designs and accessories. Out of a sure understanding
of the currents of creativity the new designers were given themes
to focus (or widen) inspiration (Flowers, Red, Conceptual, Otherworldly,
Freestyle).
I
always get to that point, when I'm writing a review of an event that
blew me away when I want to say 'you had to be there'. Well you should
have. It was a landmark event. I spoke to a group that had come up
from Preston especially and another from Barrow. They were knocked
out.
How often do you see so many people, so pleased with
themselves, so proud of their work, so deservedly, and so many more
people, so enthused by it, having such a good time?
The outfits were - outstanding. From the peapopping
peapod to the tremendously fertile-looking Mr Cricket (and his train-bearers),
from the bubble-wrapped delinquency of 'Fragile' to the tartan knickers
of the sexy 'Bad Fairy'.
I
should probably mention the cabaret too - it was so bad it was - bad.
A man dressed as a compost bin poured water from a watering can and
a squirty bottle over a bunch of brolly-spinners, while singing 'raindrops
keep falling on my head.' Fortunately, it being the Gregson, trained
counsellors were standing by and permanent emotional scarring was
averted by cathartic howling and medicinal alcohol.
