CHRISTMAS TIDYINGS
Jump straight to refuse collection dates for Christmas and New Year 2004

CHRISTMAS WASTE
• Did you know that we throw away more rubbish at Christmas than any other time of the year? 1,111 tonnes in one week....the average is just over 900.
• Did you know that we recycle more at Christmas than at any other time of the year? 135 tonnes of glass bottles, cans and paper compared with an average of 91 tonnes per month.
• Did you know that we use enough Christmas wrapping paper to cover the island of Guernsey?

At Christmas we produce tonnes of extra rubbish! Not much of a present for the environment! However, Lancaster City Council is encouraging residents to do our bit to make the festive celebration a greener one.
Here are some ideas:

Christmas Trees
Sunday 9 January 2005, 11am - 3pm: Recycle your Christmas tree at White Lund Depot, Morecambe. You can watch it being shredded and take your chippings away with you. You can also take your Christmas trees and other green waste to the Household waste recycling centres at Keer Bridge, (Carnforth) and Salt Ayre.

Glass bottles & food / drink cans
Take all your bottles and cans to your local recycling site (to find out you nearest site call, 0800 092 9705).

Christmas Cards
Please do not put cards in the kerbside green boxes or the paper banks on recycling sites. Instead take them to Lancaster or Morecambe Town Halls or White Lund Depot where special boxes will be available in reception. Alternatively check out your local charity shops

Home Composting
If you have received your free home composter, NOW's the time to get started ... put all your fruit and vegetable scraps in along with any garden waste.

TOP TIPS for a considerate Christmas consumer:
- When shopping, avoid goods, which involve unnecessary packaging, or complicated mixed material packaging, which can make recycling difficult.
- Order any extra milk in returnable bottles from your milkman to avoid plastic bottles.
- SNUB - Say No to Unwanted Bags! Always use reusable shopping bags. Don't accept bags that you don't need.
- Buy gifts that are durable.
- Buy Recycled! Buying products that have a recycled content is just as important as actually recycling.
- Buy cards, wrapping paper and gifts made of recycled materials.
- Choose decorations that can be reused.
- Buy a UK - grown real tree which you can plant in your garden or keep in a pot for next year.
- Use old greeting cards to make gift tags.

"I hope that residents will recycle as much as they can over Christmas to reduce the extra amount of waste created over the festive season," says Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling Coun John Barry. "I would urge everyone to help the environment by planting their tree, composting it at home or taking it to White Lund Depot for chipping."

• Mobile Phones
The mobile phone industry has set up a recycling scheme for old mobile phones. The scheme is backed by O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile and by four high-street chains Currys, Dixons, The Link and PC World.
If you want to recycle your old phone handset or charger you can take it to one of the network supplier shops, which will arrange for its safe disposal. This service is free. You can also collect a Freepost envelope from one of the high-street stores above to send the unwanted phone or accessories to the Fonebak recycling centre.
Oxfam also offer a mobile phone recycling service. On average, each working donated handset is worth £5 to Oxfam - but some are worth much more. Donating a Nokia 3310 for example, could enable Oxfam to provide a mosquito net to protect a child from malaria.
