In existence by 1235 and endowed by John Gardyner in 1472, Lancaster Royal Grammar School is one of the oldest maintained schools in the country. This selective school of 900 boys (including 190 boarders) aged 11 - 18 became a Grant Maintained School in 1990 and was granted Technology College Status in 1995.
In 2001, the LRGS came under fire in the Daily Mirror for spending a huge amount of money on a new toilet which there was a possibility Princess Anne might use. This is rather like the possibly allegorical story of how the type of speed bump in the Primrose Street area in Lancaster was upgraded to a more pricey variety as they were due for completion around a visit to the town by Prince Charles...
