The local paid-for paper is good for general news and community coverage
but as with many local papers the journalists have little time to engage
in any major investigative journalism -- and believe us, as with any
local town, we just know there's a lot that SHOULD be investigated.
There's concern that it currently doesn't seem to have a real local
'voice' in the same way as, say, The Morecambe Visitor.
To its credit, it has recently presented some good reports on some local
issues, such as its petition to save local libraries facing the chop
from the County Council - but it continues to come across as very pro-business
and pro-local bypass.
Unfortunately, this often leads to the sort of bland reporting many
local newspapers appear to have gotten down to a fine art. Its excited embedded 'coverage'
of the police raid and subsequent kettling of The Warehouse night club in 2001 left a nasty
taste in the mouth.
The Lancaster Guardian is owned by Edinburgh-based Johnston
Press.
Also publishes a weekly free paper, sometimes delivered door-to-door, called the Lancaster Reporter which usually carries lite extracts such as arts reviews from the previous week's Lancaster Guardian, plus advertising.
NB Tim Bowdler, CEO of Johnston, (who was also, controversially, a non-executive director of Miller Group), retired in 2009 leaving Johnston grappling with a massive £477m debt. Links to other Johnston Press papers in the UK

Morecambe's newspaper is exactly what it says on the tin with a strong
editorial style that presents news about the people and issues facing
the town with real vigour. If you live in Morecambe it's an accurate reflection
of what's happening there.
The Visitor also features some interesting features on historic Morecambe
as well as a regular events guide. The Morecambe Visitor
is owned by Edinburgh-based Johnston Press.
