By fast food we are not talking about your US imported homogenised
rubbish. We are talking fish and chips from newspapers, kebabs and other
takeaways that will properly sate the late night hunger borne from a
good night in the pub - or simply a meal when you can't be bothered
to cook.
We need your help! We want to add as much information as possible
about opening times etc. to this part of our Eating Out section. We
don't have the person power to check them all so please note the opening
times of your local shop and send them to us – plus any comments you may have. Thank you!"

Award-winning chippy! karin Jones (May 2008): Just amazing. I have been conducting a love affair with this chip shop for neigh-on ten years. When I lived abroad, my first meal on returning was always Hodgson's. When we have family visit from abroad and take them there they rave about it. The chips are perfectly cooked, the fish is fresh and the mushy peas are an entirely earthly green (as opposed to the luminous space variety you get at other chippies). My husband does complain about the lack of chicken and spring rolls but I suppose that in order to do things as well as they do, they have to specialise. Long live Hodgson's, a Lancaster tradition! James Seddon (Jan 2007): Week in week out this place delivers, it's clean, the staff are efficient and friendly and the F&Cs are excellent, everything is so fresh. This is a must do for lovers of our greatest national dish. Saffron Warde-Jones (Dec 2006): Having recently moved to Lancaster, Hodgson’s Chippy saved my life in the early weeks; when surrounded by removal boxes and unable to cook at my new house, I still had to find good value meals for me and my 3 young children! This chip shop thoroughly deserves its awards and its enduring popularity is evidenced by the queues that form. The staff are highly organised and the resultant quality of the food is well worth the wait. Although I can now cook at home, I shall continue to drive across the city centre to Hodgson’s when I feel the need for a day off. • Eaten here? Send

Sam Hebblethwaite (Feb 2007): What can I say? The Special fired rice and curry sauce has been consistently good for over 15 years!
I like my fried rice to remain whitish, not turn into a brown mulch. There's loads of meat and the green peas add just the right amount of sweetness.

us a review! Ian Dean (July 2007): Having had a menu posted through my letterbox from China Chef, I fancied a
change from my local six chinese takeaways. I ordered beef in tomatoes + egg
fried rice. The beef and tomatoes tasted more like fat, it was very salty and
there were more tomatoes than beef. The egg fried rice was about the best
thing. The spare ribs were overcooked and seem to have been burnt by this
overcooking, they were also pretty dry, even though they were in barbecue
sauce.
Max Johnson (December 2006) writes: Not great, but the food is edible. It seems to be the best of an appallingly awful bunch of local Chinese takeaways.

October 2007): Having despaired of finding any edible Chinese food in Morecambe unless I make it myself, Max's came as a very pleasant surprise when it opened a few months ago. It's not big city Chinatown, but it's really good! The food actually tastes like it should with distinct and assertive flavours, the meat and vegetables seem fresh, it seems well made, it's not loaded with salt or sugar and best of all it's consistently good. My experience is that deliveries turn up within half an hour. I've started using Max's once a week, but only ever on Wednesdays and Thursdays so can't vouch for other nights!
Prices are average, e.g. (Salt & Pepper Ribs £4.10; Duck with Plum Sauce £4.60). £1.00 extra for deliveries under £10 or over 4 mile radius. • Eaten here? Send

Absolutely hooked on to it, by far the best place for students and budget eaters as well as those who cannot live without Punjabi food. Steven Edelman (Jan 2008): The buffet comes with everything needed for a top curry evening, a top place to eat with good quality and very, very low prices. Neil Foxlee (Dec 2007): Imran's is serving reasonable Punjabi food at a very reasonable price (£4 for evening buffet!). Also very cheap take-away. (NB All-you-can-eat buffet is now £5 and still outstanding value!)

I have used this restaurant twice and the food has been excellent. The first time, the food was late and only lukewarm when it arrived, but apparently they were a driver down. When I discussed this with the owner he was most apologetic, made reparation, and even came himself, the second time, with my order! Notwithstanding teething problems (they are a new enterprise), the food was sublime on both occasions (and on time and hot the second time!). The Chicken Patiya and Garlic Chilli Chicken were perfectly spiced, the sag bhaji and tarka dal also measured up well. The chapatti was a little dry, but the stuffed paratha excellent – considerably better dough and more well stuffed than those from other Indian restaurants I’ve tried in Lancaster. They also offer student discount – hooray! The owner comes from a family of chefs, his father is a well-known wedding chef, and is very personable and helpful. I usually chuck unsolicited leaflets straight in the recycling, but was seduced by the appearance of the menu, which was printed on quality paper. I’m glad to say that my speculative orders reaped dividends! I requested some extra copies of the menu, which I now intend to circulate amongst friends, should they have recycled theirs without further reflection!

That is why I bought the place.

• Kentucky Fried Chicken
King Street, Lancaster Maggie Horton (Jan 2008): Several years ago, KFC Lancaster used to be great. Sadly,
standards have fallen and I fully agree with Dawn Southern's
review - the staff need to have a good wash and management need to
pull their socks up. As the quality of food and service dropped I
decided only to visit the store for food when absolutely
necessary. On every single occasion my order has been incorrect
and the food has been cold and bedraggled. This is especially
galling as the service is so slow with queues snaking through the
store and out of the front door. Serving times of 20 minutes plus
seem to be the norm and on one occasion I had to wait for 45
minutes! The restaurant area never appears to look clean so I
dread to think how things are behind the counter, etc! I get the
impression that health and safety may not be the highest priority
for management as I have heard many stories of illness following
visits to this store - normally involving popcorn chicken for some
strange reason!
I am writing this review now as KFC Lancaster has recently
undergone a complete refurbishment. I had high hopes that things
had improved with a fresh new start. Unfortunately, this is not
the case - the queueing system is still ill-conceived and the
restaurant is still a mess. My husband and I queued for 30 minutes
for our food last night only for it to be cold. Consequently, we
have both been ill overnight and my husband is unable to work
today! Lancaster Council and Health & Safety will be receiving a
phone call. Dawn Southern (October 2007): I have eaten here a few times and each time I say never again but I do soooooooooo love KFC.
The staff are terrible, look like they need a good scrub down, attitude problems, and so disorganised.
They do not listen to orders properly and fairly often get them wrong. I do not know how many times I have got food home (down the rd) and found it is the wrong order and ended up having to go back with it - and get sarcastic chatback from them like "would you like to check it now b4 you go.." grrrrrrrrrr. The manageress wants to change the lot of staff or get herself new job as she cannot control them.
Dawn wrote again: Since sending in this report I have yet again like a fool gone up to KFC Lancaster and each member of staff looked like they needed a good scrub. The place was filthy and I will never go in it again. Ian Dean (July 2007): KFC what can I say, it's got to be one of the best I've been to bar Preston Friargate, which is the first kfc in the UK. Lancaster seems to have sorted
its act out and finally have staff that have worked there for several
years, instead of the influx of students who have no desire to work in the
fast food industry. The food is always to my liking and if there's ever any
problems such as extra mayo or ketchup the staff always give the stuff
instead of trying to charge you more..

This company allegedly has the most lawsuits from franchises in the
