21 and Over
Director: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
Certificate: 15
Cast includes: Justin Chon, Miles Teller, Skylar Astin
Comedy. Medical student Jeff Chang is encouraged by his two friend to celebrate his 21st birthday with an epic party. However news of the party spreads and things spiral out of control as the night and celebrations progress. Will Jeff be able to attend and impress at the important medical school interview scheduled early the next morning? The film does not break much new ground. However if you are in the mood to enjoy a little debauchery and slap stick this is the film for you.
All Stars
Director: Ben Gregor
Certificate: U
Cast Includes: Theo Stevenson, Akai Osei-Mansfield, Ashley Jensen
A group of London adolescents find their youth club, the Grange, is threatened with closure. Hence Ethan holds a talent contest to find a dance crew who can put on a performance and so save the Grange. The film does not break any new ground with plot. However the dances are excellent, with especially enjoyable dream sequences. Also the film finds time to explore friendships and problems amongst the eclectic mix of school kids and there are nice one liners and good performances from the adult members of the cast. This is a fun, feel good movie that will appeal to anyone aged six upwards.
Chimpanzee
Director: Alastair Fothergill , Mark Linfield
Certificate: U
Cast Includes: Tim Allen, China Anne McClain
A documentary from Disney that follows in the steps of the True Life Adventure series that started in the 1950s. Oscar is a 3 month old chimp and the film narrates his story as he is reared by his mother Isha. However Oscar is orphaned and must fend for himself until he becomes adopted by the leader of his group. This movie is children friendly with stunning scenery and an anthropomorphic storyline that ensures it remains cute despite the harsh realities of chimpanzee life.
Evil Dead
Director: Fede Alvarez
Certificate: 18
Cast Includes: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci. Elizabeth Blackmore, Jessica Lucas
A remake of Sam Raimi's classic 1981 cult horror film. Set in a derelict cabin within the woods, a group of young friends discover a Book of the Dead in the cellar. Reading passages from this summons up the demons which reside in the woods. The demons then possess the cabin's inhabitants in turn till only one is left trying to survive. The remake is a very competent horror film, is more polished than the original and takes itself more seriously. However one is left wondering if it really adds anything to the 1981 release.
Iron Man 3
Director: Shane Black
Certificate: 12A
Cast Includes: Robert Downey Jr. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley
The latest installment of Marvel Comic's Iron Man sees our hero Tony Stark fighting the Mandarin, leader of an international terrorist organisation who has captured his girlfriend. Iron Man must battle to save himself and those closest to him. The film contains violence and suspense whilst allowing the Iron Man (Tony Stark) to exercise his technical ingenuity.
Olympus Has Fallen
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Certificate: 15
Cast includes: Morgan Freeman, Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Melissa Leo
North Korean terrorists capture the White House (Olympus) kidnapping the president. Can Mike Banning, a disgraced former guard trapped in the building, help save the day? This is an enjoyable action film with wisecracks, violence and explosions. It can be enjoyed at two levels, either as a straight forward action movie or as something of a black comedy.
Star Trek Into Darkness
Director: JJ Abrams
Certificate: 12A
Cast includes: Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch
Its the crew of the Enterprise vs a physically invulnerable antagonist in the form of John Harrison who is inflicting terror on earth and in space. The film is action packed with chases, explosions and combat. However the movie still finds time to develop the relationship between Spock and Kirk and explore the personalities of the other crew members. There is gentle humour, particularly involving Spock to provide a counterpoint to the action and violence. In all an excellent addition to the Startrek franchise that will be loved by Trekkie's and enjoyed by all.
The Great Gatsby
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Certificate: 12A
Cast Includes: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire
An adaption of D Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 classic and influential novel of lost love in the roaring twenties. Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) is enamored of Daisy Buchanan, who is married to a cruel husband. The story is narrated by Daisy's cousin and would be writer Nick Carraway. Nick has come to New York from the Midwest to follow his own dreams and he is enlisted by Gatsby to arrange a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. The strengths of this film include the acting of DiCaprio and Mulligan and also the sumptuous depiction of the night life in the prohibition era. The centre of action is both the doomed love affair and also the angst experience by Nick Carraway as he becomes immersed in the hedonistic atmosphere of the 20s.
Wreck it Ralph
Director: Rich Moore
Certificate: PG
Film animation starring video game characters. Wreck it Ralph rebels against continually being the bad guy and being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, by jumping into different video games to prove himself a hero. He meets a champion (Sargent Calhoun) from a first person action game and the trouble-making Vanellope von Schweetz from a racing game. Ralph inadvertently unleashes the enemy of the arcade and must strive to made amends. This film is a great and very enjoyable piece of hokum. Kids will be enthralled and computer gamers will revel in the in-jokes and gaming references.
